Who broke the enigma code4/12/2023 ![]() Other, smaller voice scramblers were insecure and easily decoded by the Nazis.ĭelilah worked by combining the speech to be scrambled with what sounded like random noise, similar to an untuned radio. The three young Polish mathematicians who were the first to crack the new German military Enigma code got their faces on a modest 5 zloty postage stamp in 1983. Called SIGSALY, it weighed 50 tonnes and required thousands of watts of power. Alan Turing, genius of Enigma code-breaking during World War Two, will be the face on Britain’s next 50 note, which we’ll see in 2021. By contrast, the secure phone system that linked the British prime minister at 10 Downing Street to the US president in the White House was so large that it had to be installed in the basement of the Selfridges store on London’s Oxford Street. It was named Delilah and could be used to scramble a telephone or radio conversation.ĭelilah was revolutionary because the scrambling system was very hard to break, yet was portable. However, were it not for the work of a team of Polish mathematicians, Turing and his team would have faced a far more daunting task. Although Polish mathematicians had worked out how to read Enigma messages and had shared this information with the British, the Germans increased its security at the outbreak of war by changing the cipher system daily. Ask most people who broke the Enigma code and they’ll more than likely reply that it was the boffins and eggheads stationed in Bletchley Park headed by the legendary Alan Turing. The Enigma was a type of enciphering machine used by the German armed forces to send messages securely. At the secret UK government laboratory at Hanslope Park in Buckinghamshire, Turing led the development of a portable device for speaking securely with another person. The main focus of Turing’s work at Bletchley was in cracking the ‘Enigma’ code. Turing is often associated with breaking codes, but in 1943 he also spent time making them. ![]() It was based on a special form of arithmetic and was years ahead of its time. ![]() At first they seemed near-impossible to decipher, but using a combination of mathematics and engineering, he and his colleagues found a way, and so shaped the course of the war.ĭuring this period, Turing also devised a portable machine called Delilah that could securely encode a voice message. Reconstructed: the Bombe machine’s dials, used to break Nazi Enigma codesĭuring the second world war, Alan Turing was recruited by the Allies to crack the coded messages used by the Nazis.
